Prison Hosts Daddy-Daughter Dance: How Should We Feel?

Friends,

Today we reported a touching story about a daddy-daughter dance hosted at Richmond City Jail in Virginia. While I applaud the jail for enabling little girls to spend quality time with their confined father, I was forced to recall the number of stories we’ve reported about the school-to-prison-pipeline. Is there a plot to desensitize children’s perception of confinement? By hosting a dance at the jail, will these little girls grow up less fearful of it because they’ve danced in it? I know two women who have spent decades visiting their father in prison and the trauma of that experience has motivated both of them to do all they can to never become a prisoner.

With million-dollar privatized prisons popping up in the midst of massive school closings, one would be remiss to not question the overt attempts to fill those empty jail cells with our children. My colleague Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu is an expert in educating Black children. He has spent more than 30 years consulting urban school districts across the nation about teaching Black children. He and I are in agreement that our children are in grave danger. We’re witnessing the school-to-prison-pipeline unfold right before our eyes. What can we do to dismantle it? One thing we know for sure is sitting still will not save our children.

Dr. Kunjufu and I formed a special partnership to offer you the necessary tools to help your children submerge from systemic oppression. I’m pleased to announce that from our conversation, Dr. Kunjufu and I developed the Education Over Incarceration Bundle Package. The bottom line is: These new jail cells aren’t being built for you and I. They are being built for our children. We’ve written stories about kindergarteners literally being handcuffed and escorted out of the school for “bad behavior” as if they’re hardcore criminals.  Every day I receive hundreds of messages from men and women asking how we can save our youth. The solutions are provided to you in the Education Over Incarceration Bundle Package. It is time that we organize to save our children. Friends, we are at war.

Until we meet again, please stay strong, be blessed and be educated.

Sincerely,

Dr. Boyce
